Vinyl is a strong fit if you want privacy without upkeep and plan to stay in the house for a while. A six-foot white vinyl fence costs about 15% more per foot than treated wood, and it never needs staining or sealing. It also has a few drawbacks worth knowing before you buy. Here's how to tell, from a crew that installs both.
Key takeaways
  • Six-foot white vinyl runs about $30 per foot installed against about $26 for treated wood: roughly $600 more on a 150-foot backyard.
  • Vinyl doesn't rot, warp or host insects, and never needs paint, stain or sealer.
  • It isn't maintenance-free: shady, damp spots and sprinkler overspray can grow mildew, and a hose and mild soap clean it.
  • The color is permanent, so pick one your HOA approves and you'll keep.
  • Wood is the cheaper way to get privacy today; aluminum is better where you want an open view.

The short answer

Vinyl is probably right for you if:

  • You want a privacy fence you never have to stain, seal or paint.
  • You plan to stay in the house long enough for the lower upkeep to pay back the higher price.
  • Your HOA allows vinyl (many Central Florida communities do, and some specify it).
  • You want privacy around a pool, built to Florida’s barrier rules.

Look at another material if:

  • The lowest price for full privacy matters most: treated wood costs less up front.
  • You want an open view of a lake, pool or landscaping: aluminum keeps sightlines open.
  • You like to repaint or restain to change the look every few years: wood lets you, vinyl doesn’t.
  • You’re fencing a large area just to mark the line or keep a dog in on a budget: chain link is the most economical option.

Signs vinyl is a good fit

You don’t want upkeep

Central Florida’s heat, humidity and afternoon storms are hard on wood, which needs sealing or staining on a cycle to hold up. Vinyl doesn’t absorb water, so it doesn’t rot, warp or split, and termites and other wood-boring insects leave it alone. The color runs through the material, so there’s nothing to repaint.

You’re staying a while

Vinyl’s extra cost is front-loaded. The return comes from the staining and sealing you skip year after year, so it makes the most sense in a house you plan to keep.

Your HOA wants a clean, uniform look

Vinyl holds its color and lines without refinishing, which is why many HOAs approve or specify it. Check your community’s approved styles and colors before you order; we supply the drawings and specs most HOAs ask for.

You want privacy around a pool

Vinyl comes in pool-code styles: at least 48 inches tall, no openings a 4-inch sphere can pass, and self-closing, self-latching gates that open outward. See pool fence installation.

What vinyl costs compared with wood

Our own installed prices, as of September 2026:

  • Treated wood privacy: about $25 to $26 per linear foot. Six feet costs the same per foot as five.
  • White vinyl privacy: about $23 to $30 per linear foot, from 4 feet to 6 feet.
  • Tan vinyl privacy: about $24 to $34 per linear foot.

At six feet, that’s about $26 a foot for wood against about $30 for white vinyl. On a 150-foot backyard, vinyl costs roughly $600 more before gates. Gates add about $300 each in wood and $475 to $500 in vinyl. Full details are in our Orlando fence cost guide.

The drawbacks worth knowing

  • Higher upfront price. If budget today matters more than upkeep later, wood wins.
  • It still needs cleaning. Vinyl doesn’t rot, but in shady, damp spots or where sprinklers hit it, mildew and algae can grow on the surface. A hose, mild soap and a soft brush take it off.
  • The color is permanent. Repainting vinyl isn’t a practical way to change the look, so choose the color carefully.
  • Damage means a new panel. A cracked board from a mower or a falling limb is usually fixed by replacing the panel or section, not patching it. (We repair the fences we installed; if another company built yours, we can quote a replacement.)
  • A solid panel catches wind. Any six-foot privacy fence, wood or vinyl, behaves like a sail in a summer storm, and fences here usually fail at the post. We set every post two feet deep in a full 50 lb bag of concrete mix.

Warranty

Every fence we install comes with our 5-year labor warranty, and lifetime manufacturer warranties are available on select vinyl products. We’ll tell you which products carry one when we quote.

How to decide

Start with your budget, how long you’ll stay, and what your HOA allows. If vinyl still looks right, compare the styles in our guide to choosing vinyl fence styles, then see options and colors on our vinyl fence installation in Orlando page. Frequently asked questions

Is a vinyl fence more expensive than wood?

Yes, a little. Six-foot white vinyl runs about $30 per foot installed against about $26 for treated wood, roughly $600 more on a 150-foot backyard. In return it never needs staining or sealing.

Does a vinyl fence need maintenance?

Very little, but some. It never needs paint, stain or sealer. In shady, damp spots or where sprinklers hit it, mildew can grow on the surface; a hose, mild soap and a soft brush clean it.

Can you paint a vinyl fence?

It isn't a practical way to change the look. The color runs through the material, which is why vinyl never needs painting. Pick a color you and your HOA are happy with for the long run.

Will my HOA allow a vinyl fence?

Many Central Florida HOAs allow vinyl, and some specify it, often down to the style and color. Check your covenants; we supply the drawings and material specs for your application.

What warranty comes with a vinyl fence?

Our 5-year labor warranty covers the installation, and lifetime manufacturer warranties are available on select vinyl products.
